PsychoPerceptive

PsychoPerceptive measures are:

  • Still in debate as to their effectiveness.
  • Very inexpensive to install.
  • Ideal for residential applications.

Typical Design:

  • Created from pavement markings that attract attention.
  • Tree lined streets sometimes act as a PsychoPerceptive measure.
  • Designed in a way to make the road look narrower than it really is, draw attention to an intersection, and/or deceive drivers into thinking they are driving faster than they really are.

Placement Issues:

  • Can be used to attract the attention of the driver to a particular area.

Approximate Cost:

  • Varies depending on what is used as the measure.

Comments:

  • PsychoPerceptive measures can be effective when first installed, but many traffic planners feel that local traffic become accustomed to the measures and without a physical diversion, average speeds are not affected significantly.

Advantages
Disadvantages
  • Low cost
  • Easy to install
  • The verdict is still out as to how effective they are.
  • Unless designed carefully, they have the potential to confuse the driver.
