Dr. Wooden's biography:

Amanda Wooden is Assistant Professor of Environmental Politics & Policy at Bucknell University. Her research specializations are environmental security, environmental policy, and water politics in Central Eurasia. She received her Ph.D. in International Relations and Public Policy and M.A. in International Studies from Claremont Graduate University, and a B.A. in Political Science and Russian from Syracuse University. Dr. Wooden’s dissertation – funded by a Haynes Foundation Social Science Dissertation Grant to conduct field research in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan – was entitled Silent Chernobyls: Ecological Degradation, Macroeconomic Policies and Political Institutions. In 2006-07, she served as Economic and Environmental Field Officer in Osh, Kyrgyzstan for the OSCE.  Over the last decade, she has been a short-term election observer for the OSCE/ODIHR in the former Soviet Union 7 times.  Previously, Dr. Wooden was a visiting lecturer with the Civic Education Project in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan at the American University of Central Asia and in Tbilisi, Georgia.  Dr. Wooden was also co-owner from 2002-05 of a philanthropic ecotourism company operating in southern Africa, has worked for a private journal publisher and consulting firm on western US water resource issues, interned in the US Senate and for the environmental NGO Global Green USA and the non-profit Atlantic States Legal Foundation, and worked on environmental campaigns for Pennsylvania PIRG (Public Interest Research Group).  More recently, she has been a regular commentator for Chicago Public Radio’s Worldview Program on Central Eurasian regional politics and has been interviewed for National Public Radio’s Morning Edition on nuclear waste issues in Kyrgyzstan.  Dr. Wooden is co-editor of the forthcoming book, The Politics of Transition: Enduring Legacies and Emerging Challenges in Central Eurasia.  She is also author of several articles and chapters on environmental politics in Central Asia and the Caucasus.  In 2008-09, Dr. Wooden will conduct public opinion polling in Kyrgyzstan on environmental issues through an American Councils/ACCELS Special Initiatives Fellowship.
